Freiburg
Arrived in the lovely town, and after dropping off our luggage headed into town on the light rail, we had bought 2 24 hour passes, the tram was just outside out hotel. We looked around the quaint but thriving town centre. This is a university town so plenty of young people around, and great cafés and bars. We found a great little cafe peter had a pizza and I had the local specialty spatzle mmm such cheesy pasta bacon goodness.
The next day we decided to go on the schauinsland cable car as we hadn't seen snow yet and were keen to get amongst it. We used our pass and were at the bottom of the cable car within 30 minutes. Amazing transport connections. Then up the cable car which is the longest loop cable car in Germany up 1,284 meters above sea level. We were blessed with a stunningly sunny morning, in this winter wonderland. People sledding, skiing and just 30 minutes from the centre of town. Wow. There is a tower at the top which Peter climbed, I was content with the top of the mountain.
After frolicking in the snow. Hahaha we headed back to town for an amazing steak lunch for Peter and wienerschnitzle for me, the wait staff could not do enough for us by adding a side salad for me and vegetables for Peter their menu is usually just meat and potatoes. And the best Ghluwien I have tasted so far the bar was called Schwarzler Kater (black cat) the physical exercise I think made us hungrier than usual, but we really loved the lunch.
Strasbourg
The next day we decided to go to Strasbourg on the recommendation of Tobi, this is a 1 1/2 hour regional train ride into France. I loved this town Peter got his haircut here and due to a little problem with the language (now French) he now does not need to have a hair cut for a while. Thank god for beanies haha. I found some lovely jumpers, I apparently forgot I live in Maroochydore .
Now I like to take pictures of bakeries which I like to call food porn for my sister and my French friend Maree who will always peruse the desert part of a menu before looking at the main course. She is from Lyon so what would you expect :-).
I found a very fancy bakery Christian's where you line up and then you are escorted to to display in the window, before they remove your selection and put it into a fancy box. I bought a chocolate eclair for moi and French vanilla slice for Peter OMG. Yumm.
We then move on to the Cathedral of our lady of Strasbourg construction started in 1015 and was completed 1439. The spire is 142m high. The carvings around the entrance are breathtaking .
After our walking around town we were very hungry, we met a lovely old man who wanted to show us the opera house. He suggested a cafe just up the road, so we went in and a guy was playing a piano accordion, wonderful. We ordered lunch, I had duck with green pepper sauce, and Peter had veal cordon blue, amazing food, lovely wait staff who were thought our attempts at French were amusing.
What a wonderful day.
