Lausanne to Zermatt

Lausanne to Zermatt 2/1/18

We are getting the hang of the train travel now, travelled on the fast trains and regional train transfer at Bern then on to Visp then onto a small tourist train that only goes to Zermatt, there does not appear to be any roads from Tash to Zermatt which we found out later when we left.

We arrived on Tuesday and knew the weather was going to start getting worse, more snow on the way.  We got as many photos of the Matterhorn as we could while it was still visible.  We dragged our bags over the icy snow ground to our accommodation, about 1k no wonder people were staring at us the taxi was only 10swiss francs crazy tourists they must have been thinking.

Then straight to the furnicular up the mountain to Gornergrat a place at 3100 meters above sea level, and yes the weather was getting worse we got half way up before visibility was negligible.  There is a large tourist centre at the top with cafe and restaurant couldn't resist having an apple strudel followed by two cups of warming hot chocolate .

We went outside, felt totally warm as we had prepared and brought our ski gear. Had fun playing in the snow little did we know the snow would keep coming for the next 2 days.  Loved it.

That night we found a pub that was serving make your own pizzas, you just tick the boxes next to the toppings and they make it up.  The waitress was lovely she sounded English but had an amazing skill with all languages.

Our accommodation had a small verandah which we used as our fridge, worked a treat had as much ice as we wanted ha ha.  The next morning we met a nice couple from Cairns who were staying at our accommodation.  We decided to meet back at the hotel that night for wine and schnapps by the fireplace we were the only people in the lovely lounge area, a late night for all of us that night.

It started to rain on our last day and as we all know when you mix snow with water you get ice.  The footpaths were quite treacherous, but thanks to the great boots we bought in Melbourne our feet were both warm dry and steady. We got home on the Thursday afternoon to find out that our Glacier express journey had been cancelled due to avalanches along the line, bugger !!! We had actually seen some while we were in town. Amazing sound...we thought a jet was landing.

So at 4pm we had to do our best problem solving and come up with an alternative plan.  We decided, instead of going to Chur which would have been where the Glacier express dropped us off, we would get as close to Fussen as we could. We decided on Bulchloe in Germany as it was only 1 hour away and not a real tourist spot so was easy to get accommodation at short notice.

We travelled to Tash on the small train from Zermatt then bussed to Visp had breakfast then caught the fast train to Zurich, changed trains then on to Buchloe. We travelled approximately 500k that day.  To console ourselves we had a delicious meal in the dining car of the train to Bulchloe and of course a couple of very nice Bavarian beers.
